Christ the Redeemer Statue is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil the statue was created in 1931 to pay a tribute to Jesus Christ. It stands at an impressive height of 98ft which makes it one of the largest Art Deco statues in the world.

In 1850’s a Catholic Priest Pedro Maria Boss made a suggestion of creating a religious monument in the city for the first time. His suggestion was ignored but in 1921 the Catholic Circle of Rio took up the proposal again. The Circle appealed to the people for their donations and support and the construction was finally started in 1922. It took nine years to construct the Christ the Redeemer Statue.

The design was made by a local designer and a French sculptor was paid to construct the monument. The material used was reinforced concrete and the outside was made from soapstone because they are easy to use and durable. The total cost of construction of Christ the Redeemer statue was estimated to be $250,000.

Christ the Redeemer Statue is considered one of the masterpieces of architecture of this time. It has been restored several times since its construction. It also suffered heavy damage when lightning struck it in 2008 but it was repaired and opened for public soon after. Since it was elected as one of the Wonders of the World it has been featured in many movies and documentaries. The monument has also become the symbol of the city of Rio.
